Just realised my mum would have been responsible for buying everyone's presents, cooking Christmas dinner, and then packing up everything we needed for a four week holiday so we could leave Crofton Downs on Boxing Day and drive (in the Cortina) to Ōpōtiki, maybe via a night in Taupō, and my dad would have done NOTHING! I am ashamed I never thanked her

Loved the bit on Prime Minister. I enjoyed it but found it all a bit overwhelming and sad, despite (& because of) the strained upbeat ending. Good move, taking the kids. Must take ours, too.

Well it’s the younger ones who are taking more care of the planet and things like that (from what I can see and hear), so maybe Jacinda can do more good talking to young people in countries who appreciated her. Many here do, and did, but FFS the vitriol people still spew, I’d be gone as well. It kind of reminds me of the Landlords who continued to bitch about Helen Clark NINE WHOLE YEARS after Keys government had time to roll back some of her changes to lightbulbs and pet bonds.

Brilliant as always with your turns of phrase. "Danger to shipping" - that had me snorting in agreement. I'm nearly at the plaiting stage of winter overgrowth. As for that gel oestrogen...it's been a month. Not sure it's better than the patch but I'm not a fan of sitting naked for 5 minutes in the cold bedroom letting my wings dry!

A lovely read as always tho Poor You - the lead up to Christmas in Karori and the actual event sound exhausting. I don't know how you have the strength after that Karori Halloween!

We've simplified Christmas and now follow the time-worn NYC 'custom' of a Yum Cha Christmas lunch usually with a few generations of friends, followed in late afternoon by a big platter of home made Italian 'cookies,' biscotti, ricciarelli and canele to munch as we lie about reading Christmas present books.

Glad you had a chance to catch breathe at the PM film

I love to read your thoughts, and I marvel at how much you do for family and your community! So exhausting just thinking about it all - NOvember is a great idea, but I now do it all year round. NO to everything, pretty much, and I love the freedom :)

It made me want to cry when I read what you said about Jacinda. How did we get here to this awful place and is it ever going to get better? It almost seems impossible that we had that great flare of kindness and good choices and great management of things that could have been even worse tragedies than they already were - and her reward is to be vilified and unable to live in her own bloody country. Heartbreaking.
