Greetings fellow Kapiti Coaster (albeit temporary). I have the heat pump on in my home office today. The neighbouring house was recently demolished along with a massive macrocarpa tree which I am definitely not missing in these high winds! But the absence of the house does bring in more sunlight, which is welcome when it happens. I now have a glimpse of the angry sea and can hear it so much more than previously. I'm grateful we got a few decent days over the Christmas period while I had family visiting but this weather now...can get in the angry sea! All the weight I put on over Christmas is good for weighing me down when I walk on the beach at least.
Chuckling (ruefully) alongside you on our annual pilgrimage to Waitārere. The weather is pants. Ironically, no one packed pants, only shorts, BECAUSE IT’S SUMMER!
I don’t mean to brag, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, but come to Westport on the real West Coast, where it’s in the early 20s every day, the surf is up, the pies are magnificent and - for this week at least - there’s no taste of coal in the air.
We were in Masterton yesterday visiting friends on our way up to Napier. It was 13C. Dannevirke today - 15C. Napier - 21C, windy. Miserable everywhere.
I grew up in Karori and my partner in Northland (the Wgtn suburb). We spent the first 45 years of our lives there but got an opportunity to move to Auckland for career 20 years ago. Swapped Karori & a bach at Waikanae for Auckland bays and the Coromandel (+ a bigger mortgage of course!). Hate to say it and Auckland definitely has its climate moments, but overall climate-wise we have never looked back….sorry!
This column almost - only ALMOST - makes up for this shitty shitty so-called summer. Thank you dear Leah.
I have just returned from errands in Johnsonville (oh, happy day), and the outside temperature is 13ºC. I am about to light the fire.
We don’t deserve this, Alan
Ugh. Move the holidays to February I say.

Feeling for you (but laughing as usual).
I fear for my tomatoes.

Ooh, I’d read a post about those pies, Lucy 😉
Wonderful consolation, I needed this. The furious house!
22, windless and sunny as in Middle Shotover today but there will probably be icebergs hoofing up the gully tomorrow!
Totally sympathise. We crammed everything in today while the sun was out. Cycling, swimming, pétanque. Rain tomorrow! (We are exhausted)
Yep as predicted the sky darkened at 1pm, temperature dropped ten degrees, honking down since 5. Happy Summer! X

Sigh, Greg...
Love it! That's exactly what a garbage Wgt summer feels, tastes, looks and sounds like.
