Red wind warning
Under siege in Wellygogs
Before the power stutters and cuts out in suburban Wellington (where I have weighted down things in the garden with bricks, and taped up rattling windows), here’s a piece up today on ReadingRoom reviewing the latest book by NZ’s favourite home cook, Chelsea Winter. It was a lovely commission, and fun to do.
Who knows when we shall speak again? The wind is lifting roofs, mangling trampolines, tipping over bins, grounding flights, slopping saltwater onto promenades and generally being a screaming nuisance. The kids, cat, dog and I are confined to barracks and needless to say, this is not a day to peg out my smalls.

I ADORED your review. You have an extraordinary talent - never a cliche to be seen.
Fantastic review of Chelsea's book. Isn't she such a good writer. Bugger the recipes, it's her writing I love. It's so underrated (does that have two r's or one? Strictly two, but looks weird). It's a pity there are no awards for her kind of writing, and your kind of writing, which doesn't slot into the 'isn't it mahvlus dahling mwah mwah literary awards' genre. It's writing which looks so easy, but is fucking hard to pull off.
