Stunning writing about time spent in hospitals, Leah. Hope your loved one is doing okay.
The trick for using blueberries in baking is to toss them in a reserved tablespoon of flour before adding them to the wet mixture, though the finished product tastes just the same xx
Eating your feelings. Such a good description of hospital visits and the comedown afterwards.
Didn’t realise Leonard and Hungry Paul is based on a book. Have a feeling I might prefer that. I started the TV series but found it a bit TOO sleepy and we nodding off.
They trap animals in environment club?! You’re so hardcore in NZ. I think UK schools would probably stop at a bug hotel.
Jeepers, Leah, that’s an amazing bit of writing. May, the dust in the air, and you can’t take sunshine for granted, hospitals, where time is so different, and all the sounds get a listening. Wow
Just watched the Golden Spurtle after your recommendation. Loved it, as did my Scottish husband and son. Made us a little homesick for Scotland until we saw the rain and remembered that we don't miss the weather! Lovely film, lovely community, thanks for the rec!
I have an urge to make some porridge right now; with a touch of salt and some butter. Maybe a sprinkle of brown sugar that melts into it.
Alas, I’m hiding in my bedroom as my son hosts D&D in the kitchen. I scarred them enough with my bowl of stir-fried cabbage and crispy egg for lunch; porridge for afternoon tea may be too much for “weird parent” leeway.
I was at the garden center over in Miramar today and they had a bunch of blueberry plants for sale, though they were more tree like than bush like (as I would expect).
I think my grade 8 home economics teacher told us to make muffins using frozen blueberries so that they wouldn't make everything blue.
Leah I so look forward to your newsletters and now fortnightly Listener columns, all the more since the demise of the Good Sorts segment on TVNZ on Sundays which was a regular feel good dose of positivity and humanity.
Coincidentally I was eating porridge while I read this - the porridge doco has been on my radar since last year's film festival, now we have Netflix again I can finally watch it.
Lovely to see the piece about Futuna Chapel in your Karori Local - it's on my radar to visit for one of their open days. I love John Scott architecture. Happy official winter.

Fantastic tip! Thanks Julie 🫐
Lovely writing Leah. And I agree with other readers - the description of the hospital visit was spot on. It resonated with me. Thank you.
💐
I am in Sweden just now, and imagining Katherine Mansfield asking for a mince and cheese pie. I now cannot get the image out of my head....
Snicker! I think about KM whenever I drive past her childhood home on Karori Road (as often as twice a day)

I do wonder if the hedgehog was intentional (they're considered a pest in NZ). Thank you for reading so often and so kindly, Wendy
Always a pleasure, Leah. Heart’s aflutter when I see you in my inbox!

That’s so very kind of you
Absolutely love your work Leah. Reading your Substack and Listener column are highlights of my week. Keep doing what you're doing 🤩
Vicki! I will carry this around ALWAYS

Gorgeous essay. Xxo
Snortle! I hope you made some in the end, Mary. We must appal our teenagers at every opportunity
Beautiful soulful writing Leah. You really should write these into a book.
Everyone knows a Karori somewhere in the world.
And thanks for the recommendation of Leonard and Hungry Paul, perfect after the brilliant rough ride of Half Man.
I can only cope with cosy things at the moment! The porridge movie is also LOVELY

Julie's tip about coating them in flour feels like it's a good one, Patrick
