I talk to strangers all the time - my mantra is "I'll talk to anyone, if they don't want to talk to me I'll go and annoy someone else!" Don't give it up!
Stick to your guns, parents have a right and responsibility to embarrass their teenagers. And the seagull weather indicator is a thing for sure.
